A relaxing afternoon of shopping took a sudden turn on Saturday when Macy's store security had pepper spray fired on them at Dadeland Mall.
The store was evacuated and closed after the incident.
According to sources, the suspected male shoplifter was detained by store security in an elevator. A woman tried to free the man by using the pepper spray on security.
The pepper spray went through the elevator shaft and into the store's ventilation system, a source says.
Another source in the store said many customers started coughing, others complained of headaches.
Miami-Dade Police are currently investigating.
